In our previous blog post, we covered some of the most frequently asked questions about dental implants, including their cost, longevity, and benefits. If you haven’t read it yet, you can find it HERE. Due to popular demand, we’re back with part two, addressing even more of your questions about dental implants in Oxford.
To help answer these questions, we turned to our expert, Dr Ioannis Vallis, Partner at our practice and a highly experienced dental surgeon with a special interest in Implant Dentistry. Dr Vallis has been placing implants for many years and brings his extensive knowledge to these answers. You may have seen him in a recent YouTube video, where he discusses the X-Guide surgical guidance tool and other reels where he answers FAQs.
Can Dental Implants Be Done in One Day?
Yes, in some cases, dental implants can be placed in a single day. This procedure is commonly referred to as “same-day implants” or “teeth in a day.” Unlike traditional implants, which require several months for the implant to fuse with the jawbone (osseointegration) before placing the final crown, same-day implants allow for the placement of temporary teeth immediately after surgery.
Dr Vallis explains: “While same-day implants can be a great option for certain patients, not everyone is a suitable candidate. A thorough assessment of bone density, gum health, and bite alignment is necessary to ensure long-term success.”
What Materials Are Used for Dental Implants?
Dental implants are typically made from titanium, a biocompatible metal that integrates well with the jawbone and provides a strong foundation for replacement teeth. Titanium has been used in implant dentistry for decades due to its durability and high success rate.
For the visible portion of the implant, known as the crown, materials such as ceramic or porcelain are used. These materials are designed to closely mimic the appearance of natural teeth, ensuring a seamless and aesthetically pleasing result. Some patients may also opt for zirconia implants, a metal-free alternative that is ideal for those with metal allergies or sensitivities.
According to Dr Vallis: “Titanium remains the gold standard for implants because of its strength and ability to bond with bone. However, we always discuss the best material options based on each patient’s specific needs.”
Can Smokers Get Dental Implants?
Yes, smokers can get dental implants, but they face a higher risk of implant failure. Smoking can negatively impact the healing process by reducing blood flow to the gums and delaying osseointegration. Studies have shown that smokers have a significantly lower success rate for dental implants compared to non-smokers.
Dr Vallis advises: “I always encourage patients who smoke to consider quitting or reducing their tobacco use before undergoing implant surgery. It can significantly improve the chances of a successful outcome and long-term implant stability.”
What Happens If a Dental Implant Fails?
Although dental implants have a high success rate (typically between 95-98%), failures can occasionally occur. Implant failure may happen for several reasons, including infection, poor oral hygiene, insufficient bone support, or excessive stress on the implant due to grinding or clenching.
Dr Vallis explains: “If an implant fails, we always take the time to assess the cause. In many cases, a second attempt with improved planning or bone grafting can lead to success. Our goal is always to provide the best possible outcome for the patient.”
Are Dental Implants Covered by the NHS?
In most cases, dental implants are considered a cosmetic procedure and are not covered by the NHS. However, there are some exceptions. The NHS may provide funding for implants in cases where there is a medical need, such as reconstructive surgery following an accident, congenital conditions, or if a patient is unable to wear conventional dentures.
Dr Vallis notes: “It’s important for patients to be aware that NHS funding for implants is very limited. For most people, private treatment is the only option, but we do offer consultations to help patients explore their best options.”
